Part 1
The sun bounced across the glistening ocean, and cast a morning glow against her face. she dug her chipped black nailed toes deep into the sang, trying to draw all of the energy from the earth. The breeze played softly with her short, cropped hair. she wished that the lapping waves would wash away her troubles, all her feelings and emotions, even if it left her an empty shell. "Valkyrie, are you OK?" a cautious voice came from behind the girl, as a man crept across the beach towards Valkyrie, stopping before he intruded her personal space.
"How do you think I am?" she shot an icy glare over her shoulder.
"Come on, we know it was a stupid thing to say. We said we were sorry, what else can we do?" he sighed and gave her a pleading gaze back.
"It's going to take more than a sorry, you know that Skulduggery," Valkyrie turned and faced the tall, lean man straight on.
"I know, but we still are, and we don't want you to thin that we're not."
Valkyrie huffed, and turned around, falling onto the sand beneath her. Skulduggery moved and sat besides her. Silence stretched in front of them; Valkyrie thinking over in her head what she was going to do, and Skulduggery wanting to give her time to think.
"I'll do it." Valkyrie continued to stare out at the orange sun rising above the horizon.
"Really?!" He tried, and failed, to hide his surprise, "I mean, you don't have to, everyone totally understands. We feel guilty for presuming that you would do it in the first place."
She tuned to face him, "Everybody has to make sacrifices, do stuff that they don't want to," Valkyrie stood up and wiped the sand off of her scruffy jeans, "so it's time I made one." She started to stroll back towards the camp. Skulduggery looked at her with both confusion and admiration, scrambled up and strode after her.
